Good Wordpress Permalink Structure

June 26th, 2009 . by Tony Murphy

This is the number 1 tip for your blog search engine optimisation. The Wordpress Codex defines permalinks as follows:

Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual weblog posts, as well as categories and other lists of weblog postings. A permalink is what another weblogger will use to link to your article (or section), or how you might send a link to your story in an e-mail message. The URL to each post should be permanent, and never change -hence permalink.

To change the default permalink structure on your Wordpress blog you need to go to Wordpress dashboard and then Settings ->Permalinks.

How To Get Good Links To Your Blog

February 22nd, 2009 . by Tony Murphy

I am sure that everyone reading this post is interested in how to get good links to their blog. Well there is a way to attract links that in my opinion is the best way to get good quality natural links. Its not new, its being around a long time but somehow seems to be missed by a lot of people who buy into some of the hype surrounding SEO and then go off chasing fancy schemes for getting links or, even worse, indulge excessively in social marketing.

I’ve spend years online exploring how best to develop and promote websites and I have found the key ingredient to getting good quality links to my blog and websites is:

7 Essential Steps To Profitable Web Sites

January 24th, 2009 . by Tony Murphy

I’ve recently discovered animoto and produced this video amazingly easily. Its titled 7 Essential Steps To Profitable Web Sites. I’ve also loaded it up to youtube and its had a few views. Have a look the music is really well done and the effects are really good.

Its worth having a look at the animoto site to see what you can do with it. 30 second videos are free so it costs nothing to try it out. I bought a 3 month all access pass as I intend to make lots of videos for business and for pleasure. For example I produced a video for the local swimming club which features photos of the swimmers and thats gone down really well.

How To Set Up A Wordpress Membership Site

November 28th, 2008 . by Tony Murphy

This post outlines a quick way to set up a membership site using Wordpress and the Your Members Plugin. This plugin is very flexible, so much so that it takes quiet a bit of time to get to grips with it - but its worth it as the sites work very well. Read on to find out more, but I must first warn you that the plugin is not free. Though it is inexpensive for what you get.

Wordpress Shopping Cart Plugins

November 3rd, 2008 . by Tony Murphy

I recently added a shopping cart to my Karate Instructor Ben’s Wordpress website and it works well. So I decided to set one up on my blog as well as I have developed a few courses for HTML and CSS.

As far as I can see there are only three main shopping cart plugins available at the moment for Wordpress:

I used WP e-Commerce for my friends website so I decided to use YAK for mine as it looked quiet straightforward. This did not work out quiet as I expected so I have moved on to see how eShop works out. So what follows is a quick review of all three plugins as a work in progress.

The 10 Most Popular Wordpress Themes (Stats Provided)

October 8th, 2008 . by Tony Murphy

I’ve always wondered how many people use the same Wordpress theme so I decided to trawl through the Wordpress Themes Website to see which themes were the most used over the last year or so. In order to make a decent attempt at estimating usage I decided to use the total number of downloads - not the list provided by Wordpress. Now not everyone who downloads a theme actually uses it, they might try it out then decide they don’t like it and go off and get another one - but even if the takeup rate is only 50% its still works out at a lot of people who like and are using the same theme.

Darth Vader Clone Attacks Rebel Blogger!

Darth Vader Clone Attacks Rebel Blogger

"I Feel The Wordpress Side Of The Blog in You"

I went to a games conference recently with my two young sons and low and behold a clone of Darth Vader turned up with his Stormtrooper bodyguards. One of the other conference goers suggested that the empire must have been tipped off about a number of rebel bloggers who were planning to attend the conference.

I looked around to see if I could spot any rebel bloggers but everyone looked fairly normal. I was wondering what a rebel blogger looked like when before I knew it I was surrounded by stormtroopers.

I felt vader’s glove around my throat as he said “the Wordpress side of the blog is strong in you tony1.”

I though yes the Wordpress is strong in me. Then I sensed it. I hadn’t noticed it at first but as he came closer there was a strong sense of the Blogger side of the blog from him. I realised that I was in deep trouble. But how could I escape especially with all those stormtroopers around?

Suddenly my mind was filled with plug-ins, and I felt his grip weaken. Then I thought of premium themes and his hands fell away. His final downfall was assured when I thought of the Wordpress Codex.

Before anyone else could react Vader and his coherts had fled but not before he exclaimed that Blogger would be back and that a huge range of plug-ins and themes was mere distraction.

I enjoyed the conference lots of board games as well as the usual computer games. It was good to be a rebel blogger :-)
